In 1920s Shanghai, carpenter Zheng (played by Zheng Zhegu) who has switched to the fruit business, has a shop facing that of physician Zhu (played by Zheng Zhengqiu). As fate would have it, Zheng falls in love with Zhu's daughter (played by Yu Ying). He occasionally sends her fruits and helps her fend off unwanted suitor A Fei. The two gradually fall in love. However, when Zheng goes to propose, a displeased Zhu sets a stringent condition. Zheng must bring in customers to the quiet pharmacy before he can marry Zhu's daughter. This does not deter Zheng; he devises a brilliant plan... This film is the earliest surviving Chinese movie that can still be screened, and it is also the oldest existing narrative film in China.
