On the eve of the 1968 French student protests, twin siblings Isabelle (Eva Green) and Léon (Louis Garrel) become good friends with American exchange student Matthew (Michael Pitt) through their mutual love for cinema. When the siblings invite Matthew to their home, he wins over their parents, both university professors, and gradually develops feelings for Isabelle. After the protests begin and classes are suspended, the three young people, with nothing to do, play games related to film directors and dialogue in their room. During the game, Isabelle realizes Matthew is interested in her and, along with Léon, encourages him to sleep with her. With their parents away on vacation, the three embark on a seemingly Edenic existence, during which Matthew slowly discovers Isabelle and Léon are having an affair, leading to subtle changes in their relationships, while the ongoing student protests seem to have little impact on them.
